AUSTIN, Percival Henderson
Born 16 August 1889; died 1 December 1918; buried 3 December 1918; age 29
Alice Elizabeth PARRY and William Job AUSTIN married on 28 April 1885 in Christchurch, Canterbury. Alice was born in 1863 in Cardiff, Wales and William was born in 1837 in Bermondsey, London. They had six children, five of whom were boys. Their first two sons, Henry Arthur and Albany Parry, died aged 10 weeks and 12 weeks respectively. Their third son, Leslie Gordon survived, as did their fourth, Percival Henderson, born on 16 August 1889 in Lyttelton, Christchurch. They then had a daughter, Ethel Mary, but she too died as an infant, aged only four months. Their final child, Neville Bruce, born in 1892 also survived. William had two older children by his previous wives to whom he had been married in the UK. Both of those wives died. William was 47 years old and an engineer when he married Alice. He remained in Lyttelton, presumably able to have steady work on the wharves or associated commercial activities until he died in August 1918, and was buried in the Anglican cemetery there.
Percival went to school in Lyttelton and on leaving school worked in a bakery on Norwich Quay, Lyttelton. On 26 June 1918, Percival married Olvey Ezina YAXLEY, who was born in Kaikoura, where her father was for many years a ploughman.
For some unknown reason Percival and Olvey had moved to Wellington in 1918. Olvey & Percival’s baby was born late 30 November or early 1 December at St Helen’s Hospital, Wellington but only lived 12 hours. No name was given to the child who was buried with Percival on 3 December 1918.
Percival died on 1 December 1918 at the Sydney Street Temporary Hospital, transferring from 212 Cuba Street, Wellington. He was buried on 3 December 1918 in the Public section of Karori Cemetery. Rev Hervey led the service and E Morris Jnr were the Funeral Directors. Percival was 29 years of age when he died.
Percival hadn't made a will, but Olvey was appointed Administrator of what little there was in the way of his estate. She remarried in 1920 and lived many more years.
Percival's plot is in a state of disrepair with the grave structure being broken apart by a large tree which has grown in one corner. Next to him is the plot where Rosa JOHNS was buried the day before.
